What's really sad is that too many generations are already unfamiliar with some of the great character actors of the recent past. Young people today have no idea who Andy Devine, Walter Brennan or Marjorie Main are. The purpose of this Web is to rectify that situation and to pay tribute to these fabulous actors.

There are as many categories of character actors as there are actors. From sidekicks, villains, foreigners, henchmen, businessmen and the like to grandfatherly, avuncular and mysterious the range is almost immeasurable. As for the women, there are vamps, vixens, molls, spinsters and scatterbrains to mothers and grandmotherly types. In preparing this "tribute" I notice that only about 1 out of 4 are women and I can't explain that except to say that the more complex the persona, the more interesting the character. You'll notice that the women I've chosen have distinct personality traits as do the men. No bias is intended! My apologies for the quality of some of the photographs but some of these folks were obscure enough that few photos exist or are available.
